Favorite Local Motorcycle Routes: Wyoming

If it’s scenic routes you seek, Wyoming is one of the best states for a motorcyclist to travel. The Cowboy State has plenty of mountain ranges and the High Plains region as well. With national parks and monuments like Devil’s Tower, Fossil Butte National Monument, and Grand Teton National Park, there is no shortage of beauty. There are a lot of fun events as well such as the Cheyenne Frontier Days, which is a 10-day western cultural festival complete with rodeo that has gone on since 1897. Roadside amenities can be sparse so make sure you plan ahead as to where you will eat, gas up and sleep. Here are some of the best routes in the state.

Bear tooth Path

This 50-mile trek is just south of Billings and takes you up to 11,000 feet. This extreme road is narrow, but a fantastic mountain route. You will get lots of ups and downs and not very many guardrails. The scenery is indescribable. You’ll see a lot of cars and bikes along the way and everything from rivers, rocks, tundra, mountains, dense forests and more. There are a lot of straight down views so only travel these steep grades if you are good on your bike and unafraid of heights.

Chief Joseph Scenic Highway

Travel to the extreme Northwest corner of the state and you will be just east of Yellowstone Park. This full day, 200-mile ride can be combined with Bear tooth Highway. You have good lodging options in Sheridan along the way and you will get to travel three extreme mountain routes in one day. There are endless switchbacks and vertical ascents that take you up 10,000 feet or more, Traffic is sparse and the pavement is good. You’re basically going up the side of a mountain. Enjoy the pullouts on the roads so you can stop and enjoy the views.

Sturgis to Devil’s Tower Lasso

Whether you come during the famous Sturgis Bike Week or not, you might still want to check out the town of Sturgis, where the rally goes down the first week of August every year. The 110-mile route takes you from Sturgis to Devil’s Tower and back again. This unique region of Wyoming brings pine forests, rock formations, rolling hills, small towns and fresh air together in one afternoon. Spend some time at Devil’s Tower at the end and you won’t regret the stop.

Canyon Lake Passes

Start at Alpine Junction and go north on Hwy 26 to Swan Valley. The ride is beautiful at every turn. You will go around Palisades Lake and you might spot deer and other wildlife along the way. There are rough spots in the road at times so you will want to watch for those. But once you get to Snake River Canyon, you will be able to see mountain goats, elk and other wildlife that you can’t see just anywhere. The curves and rolling hills are fun and you have some flat roads to relax on as well. Alpine has restaurants and lodging and Swan Valley has a great ice cream shop.

Ashley National Forest to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area

This route start in Vernal, Utah and ended in Green River, Wyoming. You will see red rock canyons, overlooks of the Flaming Gorge reservoir, forested hills and more. The fun road has hilly sections that include twists and turns. There are good pulls offs so you can enjoy the views and the roads are in good conditions. There are a few convenience stores along the way, but not much else by way of amenities. This route is only 108 miles long so if you plan ahead, you won’t have to stop unless you want to stare at the views longer.

Wyoming has so much scenery to take in, it is hard to see everything you want to see in one trip. Choose one route and next time, pick another. You won’t be disappointed in the views on any of them.
